Additional Rear Body Support

Examples of Lord bushings.

Unfortunately, the main body mounts weren't the only ones that were badly engineered by the brain trust at the body builder. The rear pivot mount was also under built for the stresses being exerted on it. The problem with this mount is the Lord bushing that resides within the steel mount. It consists of two steel tubes, one inside the other, that are held apart by a rubber intermediary.

The Lord bushing that was used for this mount has a maximum static load capacity of 6000 pounds. The static load sitting on that bushing, after adding up all the weights at the back of our truck, is substantially over 6000 pounds, especially when the motorcycle is mounted on the lift. But since the truck is not always stationary, that weight is no longer static. If we look at the specifications of the Lord bushing in question, the dynamic load capacity is significantly less, 1/3 the static load. So it’s only a matter of time before that Lord bushing is destroyed, and one half of the steel mount starts bashing against the other.

Since it appears that the builder's policy is to design and manufacture with no thought whatsoever for easy maintenance of critical components, the job of replacing the Lord bushing would require removing the cabin from the truck frame to do so. So to prevent this certain eventuality, I had to manufacture an additional rear support to take the extra load off that rear pivot mount. It's an easier solution than lifting the 18,000 pound camper off the truck frame.
