2016 Volvo Class 8 Exploration Truck

Why Change

Don't get us wrong, our Newmar motorhome was wonderful, and had all the conveniences of our west coast home in Canada. But it wasn't exactly nimble. Especially when we were pulling the highway trailer. Overall, the combined length was 70 feet.  So zipping up a side road wasn't exactly easy when something peaked our curiosity.

A 70' long rig is fine when rolling down a straight highway. Otherwise…

That translates to a host of lost opportunities for exploration. The other drawback to the motorhome was its inability to work off-grid for extended periods, something that we were more interested in doing. So it became clear that we needed something smaller in length, but with all the same amenities as the motorhome. After all, we'd be spending a lot of time using it. We calculated that a cabin length of 22', and overall vehicle length of around 35', would do the job. A double spare tire carrier and motorcycle lift would round out the vehicle. That's ten feet shorter than the motorhome, and 35' shorter than the motorhome with the highway trailer. A considerable improvement.
