Monument Valley Adventure
May, 2012
Monument Valley, Arizona/utah
Well known by most cowboy western movie aficionados, Monument Valley was a favourite filming destination of those old movies. Straddling the border of Utah and Arizona, the valley lies in the land area of the Navajo people, and as such, access to most of it is restricted. To gain access, the hiring of a Navajo guide is necessary. Since Hunt's Mesa fell within this restricted area, we needed someone to guide us.
A member of the Arizona Land Rover club was Navajo, which gave the trip organizer the connection needed to gain access. After Hunt's Mesa, the planned itinerary for the trip was to transit over to the "Hole In The Rock" trail in southern Utah. It's a scenic but difficult trail that starts in the Escalante area.
Unfortunately, because of mechanical issues we had with the Defender, we weren't able to participate in the Hole In The Rock part of the adventure, and had to head back to Mormon Lake on our own.
The photos below each have descriptions when you click on them, and explain the journey along the way.
