Motorcoach Trip to Mexico

January, 2010

Puerto Peñasco, Mexico

Our first trip to Mexico was somewhat different than what we figured it would be. Most often, people's first trip is usually to fly to an all inclusive resort. But for us, we ended up driving into Mexico, and bringing our own accommodation with us.

Mentored by our good friends Stan and Jessie, who logged over 2500 miles in Mexico with the Prevost motorhome more than twenty years ago, they convinced us that a trip to Puerto Peñasco on the shores of the Sea of Cortez was an easy and safe trip. Located about sixty miles south of the U.S./Mexico border, Puerto Peñasco is known by most Americans as Rocky Point. Many have built homes there, or bought condo units. But for us, it was just a visit to an RV park right on the beach.

Our friends had a relative staying there in their RV, and wanted to pay them a visit. Since we figured it might be the only time we could make the trip with guidance from someone who knows, we took the plunge. Before crossing the border we had to stop on the U.S. side and by vehicle insurance. Our Canadian auto insurance didn't cover us in Mexico, and it's Mexican law that we must have Mexican auto insurance before entering the country. A quick stop at one of the vendors got us what we needed, and off we went for our first drive across a non-Canadian/U.S. border.

I guess border crossings are much the same everywhere. It was a non-event. Questions through the window, and then a person came on board to look in the refrigerator for banned items, and we were through. After slowly making our way through the border town being careful not to hit anyone, or anything, we ended up on the highway that was pretty much a straight shot to the coast.

Once there, it was a few easy days being pestered by craft hawkers on the beach, eating Mexican food, and spending time with our friends. We did drive around a bit looking at the "rich" person neighbourhood out on the point, but for the most part we just lazed around the RV at the beach. It and the sunsets were spectacular.
