Mingus Mountain Road

March, 2010

Prescott & Cottonwood, Arizona, USA

Our traverse over Mingus Mountain road was a solo day trip that we took to find some nice scenery. Mingus Mountain sits between the towns of Prescott and Jerome, Arizona. Connecting the two towns is highway 89A, a very windy, and in some spots, narrow road. Near the summit of Hwy 89A, Mingus Mountain Road branches off to the east and makes its way over the mountain by another route.

This red dirt road was rather slippery on the day we drove it. The recent snow was beginning to melt in the early spring sun, and all this water turned the road on the north side of the mountain into a slimy rutted track. At one point we had to deal with some snow as well.

The south side of the mountain was much drier, but in some spots the road had been eroded by rushing water, and had become quite rough. But it was still quite passable, and we made out way down into the town of Cottonwood which sits below Jerome at the base of the mountain. All in all, it was a beautiful drive with the only casualty being our vehicle's recent wash job.
