Borneo & The South China Sea
Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei, Philippines, Hong Kong
Just like our Africa adventures, it all started in Truffle's Cafe in West Vancouver. It's where we meet our friends/travelling companions every Saturday morning for breakfast.
One Saturday, just as we were about to get up and leave, our friends informed us that they had booked a cruise for the four of us, and we had until Monday afternoon to pay for the trip, or decline. Since the trip was one we had talked about a few times before, and we didn't have any other plans on the go, we saw the travel agent on Monday morning and paid up. After all, there's nothing we like better than travelling with these very dear friends.
Travelling from Singapore to Hong Kong via the south China Sea, we would cruise along the north coast of Borneo, through the Philippines and then cross the open ocean to Hong Kong. We’d only be staying in each port for a day or two before moving on, so we’d really just be getting a taste of each location, and the culture that embodies it. But it did give us ideas of places that we might want to return to directly one day for a more in-depth visit.
The ship for this journey was a smaller vessel by cruise ship standards, with only 392 guests. The crew compliment was about 300, so it was certain we'd be well looked after. Our staterooms were classified as “Veranda Suites” and were located on deck six, starboard side, towards the front of the ship. They would allow us great views over the ocean and of the ports as we came and went. But first, we had to see some of Singapore. A city and country, all in one.
